THE STORY
Una Cicatriz Brillante is a prose story written by Cádiz-based poet Irene Carrasco as part of her project #EscribirParaLasHijas.
Written for her daughter Carmen, this is a story about self-love, self-acceptance, and resilience. Carmen was born with a cleft lip and palate, and the story follows part of her journey toward embracing her scar and discovering that her smile is unique, special, and beautiful.
I had the opportunity to illustrate this deeply personal story, translating Carmen’s journey into a visual narrative about identity, tenderness, and the beauty of being exactly who we are.
The story

en las manos que doblan, reposan y vuelven a empezar.
Nuestra panadería nace de la paciencia: del arte de la viennoiserie,
donde cada pliegue guarda textura, temperatura y precisión.
Creamos piezas que se sienten íntimas y memorables, pequeños lujos cotidianos
que transforman la rutina en un momento digno de disfrutarse.
Porque el buen pan es el que acompaña conversaciones y convierte lo simple en extraordinario.

What We Achieved with This Project
I created a visual world that celebrates Carmen’s individuality and reflects the emotional heart of the story: learning to see what makes us different as something beautiful.
The illustrations were designed to work alongside Irene’s words, adding an emotional and visual layer without taking away from the intimacy of the story.
The result is a warm, personal, and hopeful picture book that invites children and families to talk about self-acceptance, resilience, and the beauty of our own unique stories.

Why We Chose This Aesthetic Direction
For a story this personal, the visual language needed to feel intimate rather than overly polished.
We chose a warm, gentle aesthetic with expressive characters, organic shapes, and a sense of softness to create a world that feels safe and familiar.
The goal was not to make Carmen’s scar disappear, but to place it naturally within her story — as one part of who she is, rather than something that defines her.
Every visual decision was made to support the central idea of the book: there is nothing about us that needs to be hidden in order to be beautiful.

The loose, expressive quality of the illustrations allows the story to retain its emotional honesty.
The illustrations leave room for imagination and interpretation, making Carmen’s experience accessible to young readers while preserving the deeply personal nature of the story.
The softness of the shapes and textures creates a sense of warmth, while the expressive details give the characters room to communicate emotions beyond the written word.
The result is an illustration style that feels playful enough for a child, but meaningful enough to carry a story about identity, resilience, and self-love.
